Plus graphic design trends, Spotify's design system, & balancing brand and performance marketing
The humble mixtape. It's more than just a collection of songs; it's a time capsule of emotions, a symphony of memories, and a tangible artifact of sharing that with someone else. And best of all, it didn't cost much to make.
Originally, mixtapes were live recordings of performances by DJs and MCs who would play mixes of existing beats while rappers freestyled over them. The tapes would then be distributed to friends, fans, and newcomers to the genre – resonating with people already in the community, copied, and then passed on again. It was a common way of saying: "these are the different things going on here and how it's made us feel."
We're lucky to have a community of our own in that way. Email makers are constantly pushing out fresh copy, designs, and code, sharing what's worked, and riffing on ideas. It's a group that supports each other, cheers for others' success, and embraces the "the weird" that comes from creativity and different backgrounds. We share emails like others share mixtapes.
Community is something that everyone needs. As Margaret Mead put it: "Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed people can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever has."

Also, it would be strange for us to go into all of this about communities and then not mention anything about those in Morocco. Our hearts and prayers go out to those affected by the earthquake. We are donating to the Intrepid Foundation's Morocco Earthquake Appeal; there are plenty of good alternatives if you choose to get involved.
