Not all conferences are equal. We know, because the RGE crew has spoken at many of them around the world. It's why we ran our own for a while and called it Unspam. This isn't an announcement of us bringing it back (yet), but rather about what makes a good email about human gatherings.
See, conferences are where we join to exchange secret sauce recipes. It's like a potluck of knowledge-sharing, where everyone brings their juiciest tips and tastiest strategies to the table. We don't go just for the free coffee, swanky lanyards, or a clicky-pen. We go to meet and learn from like-minded folks who understand the trials and tribulations of the industry. And maybe steal some pillows too.
Yet, so many events focus on making sponsors happy. Or even worse: charge you a gazillion dollars while unpaid speakers hawk their wares and there are sponsored materials in the bathrooms and you get chased down because your badge didn't scan as you entered Plaza Room 2B after you got away from the person who already had too much to drink at the open bar.
People don't want that. What they want are honest expectations, cool people, great takeaways, and to be fed. Focus on the attendee and the email should come naturally. Or just lead with a celebrity. That works too.
