Are you ready for some mid-year merriment and mayhem? Today, we're unwrapping the peculiar phenomenon of "Christmas in July" campaigns like a sweaty Santa.
As legend goes, some crafty campers put together the fake snowy program 90 years ago in North Carolina, fit with carolers, trees, and stockings. In less than a decade, organizations were using the theme to collect gifts for soldiers and the needy in time for December. And then marketers got their grubby hands all over it.
Now we're left with pictures of Santa in a Hawaiian shirt on the beach telling people to go buy some discount mattresses or something. Instead, we should be using the time to connect with our audience and laying the groundwork for holiday campaigns that matter.

As for the latest bet, I finally won. If you were in the Pop-Tarts / Toaster Strudel demographic as a kid, then you have many email geek friends to reminisce with. In second place was Cap'n Crunch & Trix cereal (tie), and third was pancakes. Some people even said they actually liked Grape Nuts, but they were definitely in the minority and we didn't count them because Grape Nuts are gross.
Since I won my money back, not sure why we'd keep this going... but what the heck. Here's another bet since I'm addicted now.
