Hello didong,

Life can be stranger than fiction, which is why it can make for very engaging non-fiction. Several authors whose books I'm recommending this week draw on their life experiences when writing: Frederick Douglass Reynolds, a retired L.A. homicide investigator, has written a true crime story set on the streets of California, while Joanne Greene's memoir dives into the aftermath of a freak accident she suffered.

And, on a different note, if you enjoyed  Frances Hodgson Burnett's classic The Secret Garden as a child, you're in for a treat — Krystal Bailey has written a sequel that reunites you with the cast half a decade later.

💀 Set in Long Beach, California, Frederick Douglass Reynolds's true crime book Saint Bloodbath follows two homicide detectives as they take on a gruesome murder case. Drawing on thorough research and his own career, Douglass Reynold vividly portrays the real-life challenges of a cop and explores the complexities of the human psyche. As the detectives come up against drug abuse, gang violence, and multiple jurisdictions, can they stop the bloodbath before more lives are lost? A pacey, expertly drawn true crime story that honors the victims.

💙 Joanne Greene's By Accident is a touching memoir about pain, healing, and letting go of control — to ultimately learn that there's beauty in fragility. Having equated her value to her ability to 'keep it together' throughout her decades-long career, Greene's life takes an abrupt turn when she's the victim of a freak accident. Touching on her relationship with her husband, family, and Jewish faith, By Accident is a beautiful memoir about learning to accept help from others and finding your true strength.

☁️ A Clearer Sky by Krystal Bailey is a sequel to Frances Hodgson Burnett's much-loved classic The Secret Garden from 1911. Readers are reunited with Mary Lennox, who lives with her cousin Colin and uncle at Misselthwaite Manor, Yorkshire. In 1914, the Great War is upon them, and Mary's world is upended when her best friend Dickon enlists and Colin departs shortly thereafter. It's an ambitious undertaking to continue a story that has been read by generations of young readers, but Bailey pulls it off, crafting a stunning story about love, the ramifications of war, and new beginnings.

For more great reads, don't miss Khaled Talib's Far Out — a suspenseful thriller with clever twists, about a movie star who suffers a head injury and believes she's a 1960s hippie detective, which leads her down a dangerous path.

Happy reading!
